An article on the therapeutic efficacy in rats of a human adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem-cell line (ASCL) manufactured using our basic techniques for the treatment of knee-osteoarthritis was published in Cell Transplantation. In the paper titled “Intraarticular injection of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cell line attenuates pain, synovitis, and cartilage degeneration in monoiodoacetate-induced osteoarthritis rat model”, intra-articular administration of ASCL has been shown to improve synovitis and articular cartilage destruction, as well as to have analgesic effects, etc.

Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative disease of knee joint components, such as articular cartilage and ligaments, which is more common in elderly people, with an estimated number of approximately 300 million patients worldwide. In addition, when the condition becomes more severe, it leads to decreased activities of daily living and quality of life. Therefore, the early treatment of knee osteoarthritis is an urgent issue in terms of maintaining and improving the health of elderly people.

In the treatment of knee osteoarthritis, a treatment method in which adipose tissue is collected from people who can receive treatment and adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells are injected into the joint has already been applied in medicine. However, the treatment effect is highly dependent on the quality of the individual’s cells, and the variability in the therapeutic effect obtained is pointed out as a problem to be solved. Moreover, another problem is that the physical burden of collecting adipose tissue from people who can receive treatment is relatively high.

We aim to develop a ASCL that can be manufactured in large quantities using adipose tissue provided by a third party as allogenic regenerative medicine product. Furthermore, since ASCL has the characteristic of high-quality uniformity, we believe that its medical applications will contribute to the provision of products that are highly effective in treating knee-osteoarthritis and can be used in Off The Shelf conveniently.
