Announcement of Business Partnership in the PRP Business

Kohjin Bio Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Sakado City, Saitama; President and CEO: Yuichi Nakamura; hereinafter referred to as Kohjin Bio) and AdipoSeeds, Inc. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Junji Fuwa; hereinafter referred to as AdipoSeeds) have entered into a business partnership agreement to jointly promote a business that provides medical institutions which introduce platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatment with contract services for the preparation and evaluation of PRP.

 

Kohjin Bio has built a business foundation that supports the research, development, and manufacturing phase of the regenerative medicine field, primarily through its research and development capabilities in cell culture media, and raw materials and manufacturing support for regenerative medicine.

 

AdipoSeeds is a start-up company spun off from Keio University that aims to commercialize platelet-related regenerative medicine, and as part of its outstanding platelet research achievements, it possesses unique PRP preparation, evaluation, and storage technologies.

 

The grand design for PRP treatment that both companies aim to achieve

In recent years, PRP therapy has been widely used to treat cartilage and tendon damage in joints such as the knees and elbows, as well as periodontal tissue regeneration and skin regeneration. Because it is a treatment in which platelets are concentrated into PRP prepared from the patient’s own blood and administered to the affected area, it is highly safe, does not require surgery, and causes little damage to the body. Furthermore, the abundant membrane receptors, growth factors, and cytokines contained in platelets stimulate tissues and cells, promoting collagen production, new capillary formation, and tissue repair, thereby drawing out the body’s inherent “healing power.” Therefore, PRP therapy is attracting attention as a highly effective treatment.

 

On the other hand, challenges relating to PRP therapy include (i) individual variability in platelet quality and quantity, (ii) variations in platelet quality even within the same person depending on age and physical condition, and (iii) the lack of standardized preparation procedures across medical institutions.

 

To overcome these challenges, Kohjin Bio has partnered with AdipoSeeds to offer PRP therapy with the following highly unique features.

 

We provide “PRP with maintaining platelet function.”

When PRP is administered to the affected area, the platelets contained in the PRP are “activated” by “stimulation” such as adhesion to collagen in the tissue via membrane receptors. From within the activated platelets, growth factors and cytokines, which are key to tissue regeneration, are continuously released. The activation of platelets contained in PRP after administration to the affected area can be expected to have a high therapeutic effect. Therefore, for PRP to exert a high therapeutic effect, it is important that the platelets contained in the PRP maintain their function of adhering to the wound site after administration to the affected area and being “activated” by stimulation via their membrane receptors. For this reason, we will provide “PRP in which platelet function is maintained.”

 

We provide PRP using standardized preparation procedures.

By utilizing AdipoSeeds’ core technology for platelets and undertaking processing at Kohjin Bio’s cell processing facility, we will provide standardized PRP to medical institutions.

Based on the cell manufacturing and quality control technologies for regenerative medicine that Kohjin Bio has cultivated over many years, we conduct safety tests such as sterility tests before shipment, thereby providing high-quality and safe PRP.

 

It can be prepared with a small amount of blood.

Because of the high recovery rate when preparing PRP from blood, it is possible to prepare it with a small amount of blood, thus reducing the burden on the patients.

 

We can provide “Super Pure PRP” with minimal contamination of components other than platelets.

Numerous clinical reports indicate that the lower the amount of white blood cells in PRP, the higher the therapeutic effect. In addition, the presence of red blood cells is known to negatively impact the therapeutic effect of PRP. By utilizing AdipoSeeds technology, it becomes possible to prepare PRP with minimal white and red blood cell contamination.

 

The “visualization” of the quality of the prepared PRP allows for the accumulation of evidence.

By utilizing AdipoSeeds’ proprietary technology, it becomes possible not only to measure the amount of growth factors and cytokines contained in conventional PRP, but also to evaluate whether the platelets contained in the PRP maintain the function of releasing growth factors and cytokines. Thus,  the evaluation result can be linked to the therapeutic effect.

 

Platelet function is maintained even after several weeks of storage.

Conventional PRP is difficult to store, so immediate administration after preparation is the general rule. However, using AdipoSeeds’ technology, it is possible to store PRP for several weeks. Based on this technology, PRP is processed at Kohjin Bio’s cell culture processing facility and provided to medical institutions. This allows medical institutions to flexibly develop treatment plans, such as dosage and frequency of administration.
